Gastroenterology focuses on the digestive system: the food pipe, stomach and bowel. Our scope procedures (endoscopies) use a thin, flexible camera to find and treat problems. They are done under sedation, so you will be comfortable and relaxed.
Checking the food pipe and stomach A thin camera is passed through the mouth to look at the food pipe, stomach and the start of the small bowel. Used for heartburn, indigestion, ulcers, trouble swallowing or unexplained bleeding.
Checking the large bowel A thin camera is passed through the back passage to examine the whole large bowel. Used for changes in bowel habits, bleeding or bowel cancer screening. You will need to clean out your bowel (bowel prep) the day before.
Checking the lower bowel Examines only the last part of the large bowel and the rectum. It is shorter than a colonoscopy and needs less preparation.
Removing growths in the bowel Small growths (polyps) found during a colonoscopy are removed at the same time. Removing polyps early helps prevent bowel cancer.
Taking small tissue samples Tiny samples are taken during a scope and sent to a laboratory, for example to test for infection, inflammation or abnormal cells. It is painless.
Widening a narrowed food pipe A narrowed section of the food pipe is gently stretched to make swallowing easier.
Placing a feeding tube A feeding tube is placed directly into the stomach for patients who cannot eat or drink enough by mouth.
Non-surgical treatment for piles Small rubber bands are placed around haemorrhoids to cut off their blood supply so they shrink and fall away.
